W. Cecil Wade collected traditional heraldry metaphors in his work The Symbolisms of Heraldry (1898).
In 168 pages and 8 pages of illustrations, Wade passed on the bulk of the knowledge of “traditional” heraldic symbology known in the 19th century.
Originals of the text can sometimes be found at online used-book resellers, interested parties can also find reproductions available from a few merchants on Amazon or for those who don’t mind reading a book in electronic format, Archive.org has it available in HTML, PDF and several eBook formats.
